In 2019, the awful words "tragedy" and "suicide" have become linked in the New York City Police Department.
As the New York Post reports, yesterday, the 10th police officer committed suicide.
It was through a gunshot wound to the head.
He was off-duty at home at the time. He lived in Queens near Union Turnpike and 178th Street in Utopia. His wife found him dead when she returned to the house. As yet, his name has not been released.
Of course, many continue speculating: If police officers didn't have access to guns when not working, could suicides be prevented? After all, a gun can easily turn the onset of emotional darkness into the irreversible decision to end it all.
Other methods of suicide involve more planning. For example, even in hanging there are logistics to factor in. Jumping in front of subway train or from one of Manhattan's tall buildings requires getting from where the person is to what might be thought of as the valley of death.
This blog extends deep sympathy to all those whose lives this police sergeant touched.
