The two-hour ABC special on multi-dimensional talent Phil Hartman hammered his unknowability. The meme was that he didn't let others, especially his three wives, in. There was a part of himself that was deeply hidden.
But, over and over, supposed shocking articles in the media about those living double lives, true-life crimes portrayed on "Dateline," and one's own heartbreak in a personal or professional betrayal point out this: Human being are enigmas.
They may be unknows even to themselves. That's why from ancient Greek times to today there is the mandate for self-awareness - as if that were possible. So many errors of judgment, such as selecting a bad fit for an academic program or job, could have been prevented if human beings truly knew themselves.
That's why it's dangerous to become isolated. That cuts off feedback from the outside world. The universe provides clues on human identity. Then, myopic creatures struggle to connect the dots.
