Donald J. Tobias received a negative online review by someone who took the moniker "Mia Arce." Since he is a lawyer, he frames a fix in terms of legal action.
As lawyer-journalist, Kathryn Rubino, reports on Abovethelaw.com, Tobias went to Google's legal department to uncover the real identity of the supposed miscreant. In addition, he is considering a lawsuit for libel. However, since the review was an opinion, it does not constitute libel.
So much for all that legal stuff.
The reality is this: Reputation restoration is the job for a public relations firm, not the legal system.
A skilled public relations team could create the strategy and tactics to position and package that review as downright irrelevant. And maybe even a joke. A SNL kind of video on YouTube could go viral. Heck, there could even be a New York State Love Tobias 15 Seconds of Fame.
The effectiveness of public relations in managing branding crises is why that field is growing. And the legal one is downsizing.
