In America, reports The Economist, the Roman Catholic Church employs a million people. That's one reason to wish it well. And, according to the current issue of The Economist, it is thriving, again.
About a quarter of Americans identify themselves as Catholic. And high growth areas of the nation such a the south and ethnic groups such as Hispanics embrace Catholicism. Here is The Economist article.
It's as if the clergy sex abuse scandal never happened. Part of that may be due to the genius of the Roman Catholicism branding. It is a hybrid of exotic ritual, mysticism, and compassion for the sinner. All of those produce plenty of feel-goods. And it's more respectable to get that at church than in a bar.
The wellness industry, which comes across as pretty boring, should study how Catholicism creates its unique aura.
