This linguistics expert in Canada, as did the one in China, found me through this blog. The jobs were small back then. So small, in fact, that if it hadn't been the darkest days of the recession I would have found an excuse to exit the account.
Month by month the assignments reflected her ambition. She was trying this and trying that. She nailed down a prestigious position. The jobs were bigger. Since my academic background includes linguistics I bump into opportunities. I flagged her about one which she could do remotely, along with her job. She pitched herself. The rest is history.
Now she has a relative working for her in the side business. Every day urgent assignments come through. Because they're rush jobs, she pays premium rates. No, it's not enough to pay cash for a cottage in Westerly, Rhode Island. But it's plenty more than I anticipated.
Lesson: You never know which clients will hit it big. That might happen faster if we keep our eyes open for opportunities for them.
