We English majors gravitate to everything British. So, of course, we sucked up each detail of "Downton Abbey." That included the lack of class hostility. The servants loved and honored their social betters.
Well, according to historians, that depiction of values in British society might be simply someone's fantasy. In THE NEW YORK TIMES Book Review section, John Sutherland reviews "Shooting Victoria" by Paul Thomas Murphy. Just like now, in the England we read about as college students the underclass frequently resented the upperclass. A number of times the angry and the deranged went gunning for Queen Victoria.
The book is getting a lot of attention. That means that we are being forced to surrender our illusion that there was once some kind of golden age when the 99% and the 1% could joyfully co-exist. I wonder if that will impact the popularity of "Downton Abbey."
