Leader in journalism education, Columbia University has changed the game.
On Tuesday evening, it launched the Tow Center for Digital Journalism. That signals to both other journalism schools and working journalists its embrace of digital communications. The format, tone and content of digital journalism can be quite different from that of traditional or print journalism. With the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, we digital communicators can gain status and better treatment. More money could follow.
Actually, compensation for digital has been improving. As John Cassidy brings out in his THE NEW YORKER article on Gawker.com, bloggers used to earn about $12 a post. Now they are more likely to earn a salary in the $70,000 range. When Ana Marie Cox was heading the "Wonkette" section of Gawker.com, she was earning about $10 a post and had to produce 10 a day.
