Much of capitalism's ideology is built around individualism.
You are responsible for your economic fate.
Do well you win big.
Do not do well and you will be held responsible.
That's part of the reason why losing a job, even in a layoff, hurts your personal brand.
This could change. Distressed Uber has pointed to its "cult of the individual" as a negative in its organizational culture.
If Uber does soften that and other aspects of its culture - and goes on to thrive financially - capitalism in America could change. At least a bit.
Other organizations would get it: Team work is the platform for long-term profitability and positive branding in public affairs. Every member of the team creates value.
The challenge, of course, is for Uber to have the determination to find the right exit ramp from the past. And figure out a fresh set of organizational values. It's in the self-interest of American capitalism to monitor this journey.
