No one is that naive to worry about whether Horatio will die of his gunshot wound. But we were left with a monster puzzle in the last episode of "CSI: Miami." That is: Who Shot H? And we won't get any clues until this hot summer is over.

Every measure of the O or Oprah brand shows decline. According to Nielsen Media Research, average viewer audience for her talk show is down 7 percent. That's the third year the numbers are down, not up. Her magazine circulation is down more than 10 percent in the past three years, reports the Audit Bureau of Circulations. And neither her fans nor the Obamas felt her move into politics was wise or effective.

Face it CBS et al., Rupert Murdoch knows what We the People want and gives it to us. He is rewarded for this in that his Fox network is #1. Other networks, and other media such as THE NEW YORK TIMES, give us what "they" want. As a result, they're dropping like flies. It's amazing that sites such as mediabistro.com even bother keeping a count of layoffs and declining profits.
The question is: Why are not traditional media changing from their elitist tone and content to that of populism?

Each week Oprah becomes fatter. Her show becomes more stale. And the promotions for that tired talk fest are more and more frequent on TV. Why doesn't she just go?

Totally masterful. Tonight's episode of "Criminal Minds" started out as if it were simulating the Son of Sam serial murders. Then rapidly the plot became much more complex. Clearly this random murder spree was building toward terrorism. There's more. One FBIer's life was lost. But we don't know whose.

Tonight's "CSI: Miami" started out with dazzling dramatics. The episode opens with a man doing a swan dive out a window, with plenty of accompanying screams. When the new medical examiner Dr. Higgins, a beauty right up there with Alexx, begins so does gunfire. She is killed. Our trusty leader H bends over to check her heart. He gets blood on his face. Then he announces, "She's gone."

Attorneys know all about risk. Greta should have made a better risk calculation before she had what I see as too much work done. On her show, yes, her face is wrinkle-free. But it is also immobile and might have a slight tilt to one side. Greta's peppy analysis is the same but the TV presence isn't.

We all agree: "Boston Legal" is uneven. But we keep tuning in because of nuggets of genius. Tonight that was all clustered in the courtroom camera panning on the male Roman Catholic clergy who felt completely confident defending the no-female-priest policy. The one on the stand couldn't have been better depicted by any Catholic who can't seem to heal from all that. Fat, smug, beady eye, you just know he's moral pond scum.
