If only George Washington let us have a king - Americans wouldn't need funerals

Following The Royals is the biggest spectator sport in England.  They're always getting caught doing something naughty and, more importantly, every half century or sooner the English get the treat of the crowning of a new royal or a Charles-Diana-type wedding.

Because George Washington said we could have no king, we have no royals.  Of course, we have our celebs but Angelina and even the coming twins don't do it.  That's why all we have are our funerals and we have made them our default national celebrations.

Eight Belles Gave Her All, Just Like A Woman

Today is another sad day in horse racing.  Eight Belles had to be put down after she crossed the finish line at the Kentucky Derby, in second place.  She ran with all her heart and body.  Then when she gave her owners and the crowd her best, she collapsed.  Her injuries were so brutal, there was no choice.

Not so long ago horse racing also lost Barbaro.  Do these two losses of magnificent animals say anything about horse racing?

SuperBowl 42 - Caricature of GEICO Caveman

Maybe GEICO should have continued to develop the story of chip-on-his-shoulder Caveman or just completely dropped it, the way Johnny Carson walked away from it at the top of his game.

SuperBowl 42 - Bud Has Stolen the Show ... and our hearts

SuperBowl Sunday - 7:20 PM EST

superBowl 42 Commercials - Gimmicks Bury Message

Is it because the advertisers are paying so much for the 30 seconds that they assumed they could get away with a poorly executed message?  In the Dell and FedEx ads, for instance, it was all gimmick, in fact so much gimmick that the message got buried.  If I didn't know that red is the symbol for beating female heart disease I would have been simply baffled by the Dell ad.  The FedEx invasion of the clumsy birds added nothing to my knowledge of its services or bonding with the brand.

SuperBowl 42 - Bud Salute to Working-Class Authentic

If Rosanne wasn't yesterday she would have been in the delightful Bud Light commercial.  Visually provocative, it saluted the working-class real of this beer vs. yuppie stiff.

SuperBowl 42 - We Can't Help But Love Our Underdogs

Maybe even Patriots' fans have a small soft spot for the underdog New York Giants.  It's so American to root for anyone who's had to  struggle just a little more than the norm.

Dying For Fame - Pro Wrestlers

Pro wrestling, since it's gone almost totally entertainment, has become a killer.  The latest high-profile death was that of Chris Benoit.  But reporters Jim Nelson, Jordan Rodack and Pat Gregor document that since 1983 about 70 of these essentially "entertainers" have died prematurely.
