Cohn was known for his no-settle ethos and the use of counterattack.
The Trump issue was this: The Department of Justice was suing Son and Father for alleged racial bias in their apartments.
The details on this and other litigation are presented in the 2016 "Trump Revealed" by Michael Kranish and Marc Fisher. Unfortunately, it wraps up at the RNC with daughter Ivanka's speech. Here you can order it from Amazon.
The common sense solution in the racial bias suit seemed to be for the Trumps to settle. But Donald Trump disagreed. By accident he ran into Cohn who advised pushing back. About two years later, the Trumps did settle. But meanwhile Cohn had wormed his way into The Donald's mind and heart.
Well, The Donald isn't known for extreme loyalty. When it became public knowledge that Cohn was dying of AIDS, Trump turned his back on that tragedy. Cohn was hurt. At the end, Trump did show up at Cohn's memorial.
One wonders if McGahn can serve the new president as had Cohn attended to the real estate tycoon's legal challenges? McCahn is combative. Here is one profile of him in the media.
But his expertise is in campaign finance. That's why the Make America Great Again campaign chose him to represent it. At the time McGahn was a partner at Jones Day.
When The Donald hired McGahn to be the chief White House counsel, he also brought to the White House other Jones Day lawyers. At the time, that enhanced Jones Day's brand equity.
But, the Jones Day brand equity could decline as the White House's legal stumbles pile up. They range from the Flynn scandal to the Office Of Ethics' concern about Kellyanne's promo for Ivanka's apparel brand. At the top of the list, though, may be the immigrant ban order which didn't pass muster with the Ninth Circuit.
Questions about McGahn's fit for his new job first surfaced in a big way during the Michael Flynn mess.
Watchers wondered if, as a lawyer, he had the competence to discern the serious problems Flynn's communication with the Russia and Flynn's later denial created? If so and he informed the president, why wasn't Flynn placed on an exit ramp?
Does McGhan lack the influence Cohn had with Donald?
If so, McGahn could already have become a kind of "lame duck" in the White House. If he is on an exit ramp, will that further erode the Jones Day brand. Also, will the other former Jones Day lawyers be purged from the White House?
The Donald could return to his "Apprentice" persona and bellow: "You're fired."
