Troy Schueller committed suicide.
He had been principal at Coeur d'Alene high school in Idaho.
Some time before he fatally shot himself he made a public statement about the difficultly of going on living after experiencing so much trauma. Here is the media coverage.
Two events stood out for him.
One was when the bus driver suffered a fatal heart attack and lost control of the bus carrying the wrestling team. Schueller, the wrestling coach, and another student took control. In the process Schueller suffered physical - and psychic - injuries. He gave up the job of wrestling coach.
The other was when a graduate and close friend Tim Bush was killed in a mining accident.
Of course, the community is struggling to understand Schueller's decision. Suicide tends to remain a mystery even in this time of so many scientific breakthroughs.
A woman who had suffered more than the average share of emotional distress summed up suicide this way: The person had had enough. That's how she helped us neighbors cope when a middle-aged man jumped off the roof to his death. Her tone was matter of fact. Not necessarily compassionate.
On my good days that's the perspective I can leverage about the suicides in my own family. They had had enough. On bad days I take on the conventional mindset that I should have been able to "save" them from themselves.
Reflection: A decade from now how will people in American society think about suicide?
