According to the way The Conference Board measures things, we senior citizens are more optimistic about the economy. Here are the details from The Wall Street Journal.
The problem is this: We're still not spending.
That should be no surprise to economists, at least not to those who had relatives who lived through The Great Depression.
That generation never healed from such an ordeal. And, we also will probably never heal from The Great Recession and what that did to our economic well-being.
As I was growing up, I was continually shamed and frustrated by my parents' behavior out in public.
After she ordered a cup of coffee, my mother would gulp down the small container for milk which came with it. I guess her reasoning was: She drank coffee black but the price of a cup included the milk so she better consume the whole package.
The few times my father took us out to eat, he made us stand on lines winding around the block for the lowest-cost meal.
Of course, when fast food came, which didn't require a tip, that was it for the family. My older sister retained that tradition. Even if someone else was treating, she was uncomfortable in a real restaurant or diner.
For decades, I leveraged all that as funny stories to tell colleagues. Since their parents were much younger than mine, they didn't experience that weird phenomenon.
The funny stopped, of course.
The financial catastrophe has been hardest on us seniors because we have not been able to recoup fully the losses. Research and experience show that earning ability usually declines with age. Through my communications boutique I gross about half what I had been before I was over-60.
For me, a stronger economy allows me to sock away more in my Roth IRA and my Edward Jones brokerage account.
Over the holidays this year I will likely take a real vacation, both for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
My first stop for furniture has been and will continue to be Goodwill. While shopping for a TV stand, I found two designer dolls. Each was under five bucks. As a senior, I receive a discount at Goodwill.
