Back before there was an extreme glut of communications talent, being invited for an interview was a reason to get excited. Sure, they were probably going to review several candidates but you sensed you had a real shot at being offered the job.
That was then.
Currently, an interview usually is just the beginning of a long process that will involve a large number of other applicants and several other mandates to meet.
One reason this has become the norm is that the powers that be seem to feel compelled to screen a broad variety of applicants. After all, there are many out there.
Another reason is the fear of making a mistake. It can hurt the careers of those doing the hiring to bring the wrong professional aboard.
Also, there is the reality that myriad interviews can wear down the applicant. Everything from their resolve to their ability to remain composed will be tested. Employers are hoping to catch a glimmer of the real you.
Unless you don't want the job or assignment, you have to endure this growing process of broad competition and multiple interviews. But, if you don't want it, you can exit all that whenever you decide you have had enough.
