Sure, well-meaning or just plain idiotic retired acquaintances tell me there should be. I shoudn't have to put in so many hours. I should take more opportunities to travel and see more of life. I should do anything else but be completely in.
Actually, there was a phase of my career that was more balanced. There was a glut of assignments in ghostwriting and speechwrting and a shortage of pros to do that work. I bought a beach house at the Jersey Shore and let clients and prospects know when I was off duty.
That was then. Now is now. There is a glut of pros. Age bias is against me. I may not have balance. But I don't think I ever wanted balance. I love my work. And if I do have some hours without it, those I will spend considering starting a movement against intrusive retirees who don't know what they are talking about. They haven't been out here in years.
