This Thursday, right in time for July 4th, mobile sharing economy Uber begins its partnership with Blade helicopter. This is its second kind of chopper venture for the taxi service. Its first had been with Liberty Helicopters.
Blade delivers folks to the Hamptons - playground of the rich. Meanwhile an Uber ride, under the brandname Uber Chopper, can get them to the heliport in Manhattan's east side and then in the Hamptons to their beach house. Here is Claire Akinson's coverage in the New York Post.
Based on these two partnerships, some speculate that Uber could become a major player in the niche for luxury travel and second homes. In that category it could extend its brandname beyond transportation. Airbnb has done that with going beyond lodging to experimenting with dining. In California it has a pilot of meal sharing in people's homes.
