Somewhere along the line we take a mental snapshot of what success should look like. Then that becomes embedded in our wiring. It guides the choices we make, for instance, where to put our energy, how to build our network and what assignments or jobs to seek.
Yet, more and more of us are finding that success resembles nothing like the photo. At that point, we can accept that we have made it in that niche, continue on that path or chase an image. After all, this is 2014, the age of total disruption.
I loved it. A very different world opened up from the selfie I had taken of me as a ghostwriter for world leaders on weighty issues. The new universe is all about credit cards, negative interest rates, price of equities and eventually digital payments. More and better assignments keep coming in.
The trick is to accept what is and value it. That's hard, after all that planning. What's in the photo seems more real and more important than the good luck which has come my way.
