Yesterday at a support group here in Tucson, Arizona, a middle-aged woman felt outfoxed by her daughter. She asked us how that had it happened.
For Father's Day, the daughter had posted photos of the woman's two former husbands. One had been her biological father, one her stepdad. She mandated her mother join in the connecting by clicking "like." The woman still had gotten on the other side of her resentment against both. But she clicked. Now she has added a resentment against her daughter.
Those of us in the group who understood social media told the woman to forgive herself. We had found ourselves being sucked into the same kinds of emotional force fields, especially in supposedly close relationships. Yeah, the Bullying of Likes.
My solution? I took down my Facebook page. I re-established one just for commercial purposes. Human relationships are too complex for simplification into Likes.
