We are all only on assignment. That's the 21st century meme.
The traditional job is vanishing. Maybe we get to still have one of those when we are young. But then we really are only on assignment, with our eye constantly on hustling for the next one. This is the contract employee or free agent economy. Sure we can frame that as self employment or whatever.
Our new life is that of a salesman. Those who can't get the hang of that will starve. They're the ones we read about in the business media who have given up looking for work. The reality is not that they have given up but that they don't know how to sell.
Recently I relocated to the Southwest. I am learning how to sell into this market. It is slower than the one back in the Northeast. In my first marketing campaign I didn't get any bites. I did course correction. For the second there have been responses.
Do I like selling? I have come to. What stood in the way of success before was the expectation that I didn't have to sell. There was the magical thinking that clients should simply appear.
Can anyone learn to sell? It's hardwired in the human species. None of us would have survived infancy had we not sold our caregivers on taking good care of us.
