Tonight I attended a class at a Buddhist temple. The instructor kept reading excerpts from this book and that book. I wondered why. The public speaking which resonates, no matter the format or the setting, is from the heart.
Since the early 1980s, I have been observing the extreme quality of speaking at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Over the years I have even brought clients to meetings which were open to the public. Totally unscripted, the address represents a deep dig into despair transformed into hope. Never have I or my client been disappointed. Yes, we were transported.
Where we wound up was in the unique emotional space created when one human being removes the protective layers in order to truly help another human being. That space is beyond the usual defaults of self consciousness - shame, arrogance and magical thinking.
