With wellness the emerging religion of the majority in the U.S., those who don't take proper care of themselves are shunned. I bear witness to that new kind of old time Roman Catholic excommunication in the 1,400 unit complex where I have lived for 8 years.
A can no longer be even casual friends with B. That's because B smokes cigarettes. Not only that, B's numbers, including for blood pressure, are bad. Yet B ignores all that. Clearly, B could lead astray others. In Catholicism that kind of relationship was labeled a "near occasion of sin."
There are a lot of B-types. They are not invited into any of the cool crowd's activities. The they include me. Clearly I was not a Healthy. There was nothing to boast of in my numbers. I was seen ducking into the deli and coming out with bad stuff. No surprise, when me the porker lumbered over to the cool kid's picnic table the group tensed up. They did not offer me a piece of the healthy watermelon they were sharing.
It's obvious what I have to do: Take proper care of myself.
