The SuperBowl made many forget their favorite primetime soap opera - "Downton Abbey." What they missed this evening is that a letter confirmed that Lady Edith is pregnant and single. She is moping about. Everyone, including the Earl, wonders what is wrong.
Well, the reality of Edith is that everything is wrong. Unlike Mary and the late Sybil she doesn't have looks. Mary could pull off breaking the rules about no sex before marriage. Edith winds up with child. Matthew accepted Mary's compromised state. Edith's man is nowhere to be found. This could be the second time she has been jilted. And, worst of all, she lacks the wisdom of most of the other women at Downton Abbey. Granny, Cora and Mary have been able to reframe whatever and move on. Edith gets stuck.
The other major plot line is Mr. and Mrs. Bates' feeble attempt to get beyond the rape. They go out to a nice restaurant. But it takes Cora's intersession for them to get a table. We fear the worst when Mr. Bates says aloud to Anna that he will murder the culprit who violated her. Yeah, we can expect action on that front.
