On the other hand the single-digit cold weather hangs on. As long as it does, folks will be hunkered down by their televisions and videos and not in brick and mortar stores buying, restuarants dining or maybe even bellying up to the bars. That could derail Q1 GDP growth. So much for a strong recovery.
The areas surrounding my residential complex are unusually quiet. We could hope that folks are on their computers ordering merchandise and services online. Maybe that's the way some people manage a foul mood. But others, overwhelmed with cabin fever, might decide to just sulk and not spend money on the web.
Think about it. We just finished with the energy-zapping excesses of the holidays. We assumed we could return to Normal. But this weather hasn't been Normal. It's a wrench in what we anticipated to follow the disruption, pleasant or unpleasant, of the long Christmas season.
