Success has many mothers. Back in Watergate days, those included Congressmen conducting televised hearings, journalists and the newspaper they represented and, of course, Deep Throat. Therefore, we anticipate new brandnames will be created during Bridgegate. All media, ranging from tabloid NEW YORK POST to upscale THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, have been giving the issue prime shelf space. Here, for example, is up-to-the-minute coverage by NYP.
With good reason, the ambitious see opportunity in pushing Chris Christie to out what he knew about the blocking of Fort Lee, New Jersey traffic onto the George Washington Bridge and when he knew it. The Rasmussen Reports poll, notes NYP, found that only 32 percent of those surveyed believe Christie was unaware of his aides' mischief.
It's also a lot of fun to observe a high-profile political leader, obviously on the way to compete for the White House, struggle. If he falls, the less-successful will have it confirmed that it isn't worth striving for more.
In any event, Bridgegate is a welcome distraction from the weather events on the East Coast. Those, in themselves, are sucking success from retail and other forms of business. I have a hunch Q1 GDP will take a hit.
