We ghostwriters are ringing out 2013 full of joy about the boom in demand for our services.
Therefore, our objectives in forming New Year's resolutions for 2014 are to ensure the financially good times continue to roll. Here are have-to resolutions to make. Stick with just some of them and we should all be financially secure.
Know Contract Law. There are bad people out there. There are also careless people. Understanding contract law prevents disasters and disappointments for us. Yes, have them or you prepare a simple contract. Both should sign it. When there is a breach of that contract, you must figure out what to do and then do it.
Always Market. Being overwhelmed with assignments or with our full time job is never an excuse for not studying the marketplace and hustling for extra work. The world of work has turned completely volatile. We must default to being a Marketing Animal. Sure, volunteering in a political campaign constitutes useful work on ths side to nail down. The important thing here is to never ever ever rely on several accounts or one job.
Do Favors. Favors take many forms. I referred to a client in Canada a lucrative remote opportunity. After she applied for it and got it, she chose me to handle the Facebook-like commenting and the short blogging. Those tasks, in turn, helped me land an account ghostwriting web content for a company involved in the same service. The client in Canada thinks well of me. And I made out like a bandit.
Learn Something New, Anything. In this market, we have to hit the ground running. Prospects want to see samples that we really have a certain niche down cold. I learned personal finance through an online course I was awarded a free place in by McGraw-Hill. A lot of assignments have come my way. The challenge is not to waste time with what's not marketable. Years ago I pulled out all stops building a portfolio of corporate social responsibility. Turned out the lawyers had the lock on that niche. Never made a penny.
Keep In Touch. There's an art to staying on prospects' and clients' radar. No. we don't just release an email blast about a service we are offering. Fun holidays like Halloween are a better opportunity to send a greeting and a low-cost something such as a Dunkin' Donut gift card for a pumpkin latte.
Take Care of Ourselves. My new mantra is telling people, "I'm sorry but I can't do that because my work is very demanding." That allows me to take breaks and read the print THE WALL STREET JOURNAL and enjoy long walks with the dog. Usually taking care of ourselves means cutting out being so nice.
Happy 2014 to all ghostwriters and our wonderful clients. May we prosper in the new year.
