On the other hand there are infinite numbers of ways you can make a topic sufficiently complex. Go there and, at the very least, you fail. At the worst you become a joke. There was Hillary Clinton's early career blunder during her husband's first term as president when she tried to reform healthcare. All the media saw was complexity.
Yet, the successful still default to trying to become more successful by bringing on the complexity. That trend seems to be growing.
Both here in the U.S. and north in Canada I have clients who aren't systems people per se. However, what they do has taken on system-like qualities, when there is no need for that. For example, they develop Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, and even a 5. Already, you are feeling overwhelmed?
It doesn't stop there. Proud of their levels, they come to me to promote that very complexity. One morning I woke to an email from the client saying, "I dreamt of Level 4."
In addition to triggering gaze-over, complexity prevents stickiness in communications. People can't mentally or emotionally grab hold of the essence. They are led to become trapped in the dark hole of the levels.
Apple told us, "Think different." That was it. That still resonates.
