"Rich channels of communication, particularly face-to-face interaction, matter much more than electronic communications channels. In other words, e-mail can never fully replace meetings and conversations." - Alex "Sandy" Pentland "The Data-Driven Society," SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, October 2013 (sub. req.)
From respected sources such as this director of the M.I.T. Human Dynamics Laboratory, it's being confirmed that in-person communications deliver more impact that everything we are doing digitally. In a sense we are back to the wisdom of Woody Allen. He sagely assessed that a big part of success is just showing up. And savvy salespeople, despite the web and mobile, always pushed to get in our face.
No fools, both the private sector and nonprofits have been hustling to put on special events. Instead of reaching out through Facebook and other social networks they are being creative in designing the kinds of in person activities which will get pull us into their force field.
So, whatever it is that you want - board approval, a new account, a job, cooperation from employees - push to make your pitch in person. And grab what invitations come your way. You need to be there. The more there you are the better the odds for success.
