For many of us Baby Boomers, our idea of making a living has gone full circle. We grew up with the Italian immigrant (my uncle was one of them) who ran a fruit stand. And wound up retiring at age 50. Then we went off to college and then corporate America to work at that good job. Well, 195,000 new jobs were created in June but the odds are they aren't good - that is, secure.
Most of us already have embraced or will the free agent economy. Even if we have a job we have to do it with the mindset of what's being called the "solopreneur." We can't depend on the system. We have to look out for ourselves, asking if in the position we are learning new skills and making useful contacts.
According to MBO Partners, by 2020 40 to 45 percent of the workforce will be free agents. By 2030, the majority. Immigrant hustle has been back for a while.
