After 18 months, I am totally used to it. I have become generation-blind. In the past nine weeks, all my clients for ghostwriting/speechwriting have been under 30 years old. Neither they nor I seem to notice.
When I walked into a public relations agency 18 months ago and the client was about 23 years ago I felt, well, old. It must have showed. The client smiled one of those full-chopper jobs that are flashed in awkward situations. The actual work wasn't much different than what I had been doing for Silent Generation and Baby Boomer clients.
The hitch came when the client wanted a "cool" tone. In those cases "cool" was whatever they decided it was. That was and is hard. There is no absolute cool, only people's perceptions of what cool looks like if it's a text piece or sounds like if it is a speech.
Probably few expected the generations to work together so seamlessly. If this continues to be so smooth, as well as lucrative, I will be hustling out there until I am in my 80s. Rupert Murdoch and Warren Buffett are my role models.
