Being a celebrity, even a small-time one, is supposed to be such an awesome experience that youth will do serial internships in glam industries hoping for it to happen.
Well, it has been happening to me since last Friday when ABC News interviewed me about getting a job at age 67. Here you can see me on video. Although it's already days after my 90 seconds of fame, neighbors, the check-out lady at the North Haven, Connecticut library, and the attendees at a 12-step meeting all continue to tell me that they saw me on televison. Incidentally, what clown declared TV a dead medium.
What I am astounded about is that I don't feel like I thought I would feel. That is, I don't feel important, superior, beautiful, and thin. I just feel like that person the producers wanted to interview: A 67 year old woman who had the guts to go out there and look for a job, compete with Millennials and members of Generation X for it, and bring home the gold. Yes, I feel lucky at my age.
I also feel that this victory is one for all the aging who want to or need to work. Stay with it, keep looking, and eventually, the odds turn in our favor.
