A shocker. Wal-Mart on Route 80 in New Haven, Connecticut shut down this evening a little after 5 P.M. Wal-Mart is always open, including, if I remember correctly, this past Christmas.
I was among the last souls waiting to check out. Although I hadn't been in the store long when I returned to the parking lot my car was covered with about three inches of snow.
The retail figures for February will tell the tale of Nemo in New England and a whopper of a storm in the midwest getting started later this weekend.
But other parts of the economy thrive. Booze, for example. Also this could be the tipping point for aging homeowners. The rental, including the affordable housing niche, will get a boost. There was also a run on shovels. I expected scalping but all the guy hawking them wanted was $17, comparable to the price in CVS before supply ran out. Next week car washes will do brisk business, as they have most of this white winter.
