Never underestimate the power of a good hard knock to get a career going.
After the birth of her third baby Lily Pulitzer had a whopper of a bout of post-partum depression that landed her in a psychiatric hospital for four months. As Kathryn Livingston chronicles in her book "Lily," on discharge the medical doctor told Lily to find something to do and keep busy.
She tried a few other things, or as we say had to kiss some frogs, before she found her genius for fashion. Her creation of the simple shift for the Palm Beach well-maintained women was her signature work of art. Her pal from school days Jackie Kennedy agreed to wear one in a photo op. The Kennedys would stay in Papa Bear Joe's mansion in Palm Beach to relax. Jackie had a shift made for Sweet Caroline also. The rest is history.
As scary as losing our minds is, it frequently is the first step to unlocking our talent.
