This week I hit two out of the park. Through phone interviews I competed for and received assignments which were intellectually stimulating and well paid. I am convinced that success was directly correlated with my blowing an interview the week before.
It's through interviewing for whatever as often as we can that we collect data on what the marketplace is looking for and how to present ourselves in that context. Interviews are the most important diagnostic tool available to speedread the environment and deconstruct our performance art.
In the interview I blew I fell into the trap of being too candid about my professional shortcomings (without framing them as positives such as OCD an enabler to catch all typos and grammatical mistakes). The interviewer adopted the tone of a peer and I fell into a relaxed conversational approach. Dead wrong. I heard through the grapevine someone else was awarded the assignment.
Next week I am driving 60 miles each way @ $3.98 a gallon for an assignment I am not sure that I want. But I am sure that I continue to need the ongoing experience of being interviewed.

Maybe you have never really understand my existence.
