Aristocrat Edith Crawley might - horrors - become a journalist and the power of the Earl is being challenged by his son in law Matthew, but in essence the world represented in "Downton Abbey" remains stable. The elite will show up dressed in formal attire for dinner and unpleasantness will be taken into private enclaves.
At 9:00 P.M. we who endured Nemo can find refuge with the Crawleys. The old world values will give us something to believe in, if only for an hour. The fine manners will remind us of a civility which had once dominated our professional and personal lives.
As chaos continues to be the new normal, "Downton Abbey" becomes the 21st century of the safe television programming of the 1950s as America struggled to create security after a whopper of a depression and a war it needed to put behind it.
