Monday is yet another holiday in nonprofits. The families of those who had gone to work in nonprofits, when we more ambitious types opted for careers in Corporate America, have been enjoying some quality vacation time. Meanwhile some of those in the private sector are wary about taking advantage of Family Leave.
Did our Baby Boomer ambition, born of being the first generation in America to get a college education en masse, lead us to make some very unenlightened professional choices? During recessions, and there were plenty of them in both the late 20th and early 21st centuries, we suffered like dogs fearful that we would be among those cut. If we held onto our jobs we still suffered like dogs if we weren't climbing the ladder. The ethos was that cream rises. The highest my version of cream rose was only middle management. For shame, right.
Millennials, given their brutal experience in the job market, might look favorably on the nonprofit sector. Their professional lives might be less of an ordeal than ours had been.
