Aaron Swartz, probable victim of depression and an overzealous prosecution, committed suicide in his Brooklyn apartment a few days ago. A digital genius he had co-founded Reddit and the high tech community has lost a major talent.
The media, such as BUSINESS INSIDER, are full of outpourings of praise for Swartz and criticism for the feds who were hoping for a 30-year prison sentence for him for allegedly illegally downloading files from an academic databases. We writers who suffer more than the average share of depression and are excellent candidates for suicide envy the attention Swartz is receiving.
Were we to check out, our absence might be noticed by an editor or two, but probably not in a hurry. May the loved ones Swartz left behind be comforted that he left an intellectual hole on planet earth which no one else can fill.
