Daniel Inouye, who died today at age 88, belonged to another generation. His didn't hold resentments like we Baby Boomers tend to in this era of grievances.
Although he was of Japanese descent, and the American government treated Japanese-Americans badly after Pearl Harbor, he still went and fought in World War II for his county. NEW YORK Magazine chronicles his bravery.
Maybe what is holding us Baby Boomers back in our ability to change yet again, this time to stay working, is our conviction that we are right and we have a right to push back against those alleged wrongs. If we let go of that burden of what might be called "enlightened resentments" we might be able to slide more easily into how the world works now.
