"The Artist" resonates in these turbulent times. Like so many of us Silent Film Star George hits the skids when the technology changes and he can't change. He refuses to talk. His pride stands in the way. Not a terribly original plot but it works wonderfully because of most of the film is done in black and white and without sound. Also the acting is outstanding.
What saves George is that he breaks open to the caring of a dog and a dame. His dog dates back to the days when George was on top and his canine companion had been trained to be a vital part of the act. The dame goes back to a newbie actress he gave a break to. He leveraged his power so that, as the saying goes, she stayed in the picture. She does the same thing with the powers-that-be. George's comeback is in the form of a dance routine.
Of course, those in 12-step programs will view "The Artist" through the lens of needing to bottom out before surrendering to a fresh beginning. George might think of the dog and the dame as his 12-step sponsor. The message is obvious: let others help.
