In 1987, I was sitting at Kraft [then called "General Foods"] and noise started up in the corridor. The troops had discovered a memo stating that "redundancies" were going to be eliminated. Philip Morris had purchased the company.
I turned out to be a "redundancy" which had to be purged. In 2011, more often I am grouped along with other professionals as "glut," as in "there's a glut of writers in major metro areas." I am considering relocating to a village in Spain where there might not be a glut.
Deja vu. The term "redundant" is being used to describe moves AT&T intends to make now that it has acquired T-Mobile. My heart feels for those concerned about being declared "redundant." As I awaited my designation, I developed TMJ and had to wear some expensive appliance, which Kraft medical insurance did wind up paying for.
