If there was ever a lesson about the corrosive power of hate, it was tonight's episode of "Criminal Minds." A guy becomes disfigured physically, then spiritually. His way of righting the wrong, at least as he sees it, is to hunt down those who treated him badly and burn them alive. Pretty gruesome.
He's about to end his spree, since he recognizes the police have him cornered. Then he is informed that he has a son. The child reaches beyond the disfigurement into the man's heart. It sounds corny but, as one of those voice-overs on the program recounts, love can outfox just about every other feeling.
Meanwhile Hotchner, who is still being reckless with his own life, has a touching experience. His son Jack, whose mother was killed by the Boston Reaper, comes out with his Halloween costume. Hotchner notes that it sure doesn't look like any creature he knows. Jack is dressed sloppily in an office shirt and tie. He tells dad that he is dressed like him and that's who he will be as he goes about from house to house for candy. Hotchner softens. But can Jack's love pull Hotchner back from taking such wild chances with his life?
