Those of us who have read - and who hasn't - GAME CHANGE and THE POLITICIAN recognize that insiders knew that John Edwards could win the Democratic nomination for President and then lose easily to the GOP. The latter would have unleashed their best private eyes to check out Edwards and would have picked up plenty. For example, his affair with Rielle Hunter, his alleged manipulations of campaign funds, and his seeming narcissism.
The question Michael Calderone poses in Politico is if journalism, with the exception of the tabloid NATIONAL ENQUIRER, dropped the ball on this one. Why didn't it dig deeper around Edwards? Could it be because it didn't take Edwards seriously as a contender? Or could it be that the media, as GAME CHANGE captures, are subjective. Supposedly, or at least the Hillary Clinton forces asserted, the media fell in love with the idea of Barack Obama and didn't give him enough rope to hang himself.
Well, with the 2012 race coming up, journalism has the opportunity to redeem itself. Meanwhile, the NATIONAL ENQUIRER is considering setting up an office right in Washington D.C.
