"This top, which still had a Talbot label on it, cost me $1.80 in the Salvation Army."
That was the talk on the bus today. The woman, who had been laid off from a bank last year finally got another job at Wal-Mart. She was boasting about her bargains. The other riders interrogated her what was the better thrift shop: Salvation Army versus Goodwill.
"That depends."
It seems the location had lots to do with the quality, lay-out, and price of the merchandise. The Salvation Army in New Haven, Connecticut took first place. The Goodwill on Route 80 tended to have a little higher prices.
Values are cyclical. This is the way the adults gushed when I was growing up dirt-poor in downtown Jersey City, New Jersey.
