The lesson which resonates over and over again in GAME CHANGE by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin is that complacency kills careers. The book, as many know, chronicles the players in Campaign '08. Usually they hit a rough patch whenever they relaxed a little too much after a victory or a string of them.
For example, Barack Obama would deliver lifeless speeches. Hillary Clinton wouldn't try to connect with people. John Edwards would assume it was okay to have an affair.
The amazing thing is that in that Darwinian game of politics, even those fierce competitors would forget that the action takes place in the now, not yesterday.
