Both Inside and Outside the Beltway FOW [Friends of W] are having rough sledding landing comparable jobs or clients for their business. Just about everything that had made them golden during the eight year reign of George W has morphed into distinct competitive disadvantages.
So, what to do? Obviously, the first step and that's the most important one is to figure out the right protective coloring and how to get it. Former FOW want to pass as moderates, middle-of-the-roaders.
There are many paths to that goal. They aren't mutually exclusive. Among those to mix and match are:
- Do a high-profile mea culpa about being ever so wrong the past eight years. It was Alan Greenspan's admission of myopia that might have preserved his legacy.
- Join mainstream organizations, ranging from independent think tanks to those supporting generic causes e.g. battling hunger in non-partisan ways.
- Take a leap into the digital world with blogging, tweeting, and participating on a wiki. Moderates are way ahead on digital than conservatives. Just being in cyberspace sends the right signal.
- Volunteer to work for moderate candidates for the 2010 Congressional races.
All this requires a much higher level of Emotional Intelligence [EI] than FOW have been called upon to demonstrate. But my hunch the potential for extreme EI is there.
