Getting Work - It Takes a Small Valley

"We call 'it' here 'Small Valley.'"  Public relations guru and writer Marsha Keeffer was talking about her workplace: Silicon Valley.  And in the Small Valley, she explained to me on the East Coast,  all that counts is your performance.  No one cares where you picked up degrees, who you're connected to, or at what brandname you used to work.

Then it hit me:  That's exactly what's happening here in the once Establishment Northeast and Brahmin New England.  The old guard, recent Ivy grads, associates and even partners at law firms - they're dropping like flies.  No job, no hope.

"Yeah, it takes a Small Valley or at least its results ethos to get and keep work" was how I summed up the new order in that phone conversation with Marsha.  What she had just said confirmed what I had said in my recent e-book "Saving Souls on Park Avenue, K Street, and Greenwich, Connecticut." Marsha and I both conceded, sure, it's still possible to get in or try to come back in if someone makes that phone call for you or the hiring person is impressed by a Harvard Law degree.  But hanging in there is lots harder, perhaps impossible for those who don't know how to perform in ways that bring the right results within the right timeframe and under budget.
