Nice Ways To Dump Katie Couric
It's unAmerican to kick someone when that someone is down. And, Katie Couric was never really that obnoxious, even when she referred to herself as moi and even when she feigned earnestness and sincerity interviewing low-lifes. So, it's likely that CBS suits will come up with a nice way to dump Katie. The latest ratings for the Katie-anchored CBS news are being referred to as disastrous.
The best of nice would be to place Katie as Executive Director of a high-profile cause. The Red Cross, which needs lots of help post-scandals, is a possibility. Or, Katie can follow Diana, Angelina, Madonna, Nicole, and the 2 Bills into global do-gooding.
Less than best would be another media job. And that exit strategy most likely won't even get off the drawing board. Face it, the lady's damaged goods, plus she isn't getting any younger. Need we remind you that Jane Pauley, pushed off "Today," never really pulled off anything significant again. In her autumn years, the recent talk show she hosted got killed.
A could-be is putting Katie in CBS corporate. Her title would be Chief something, maybe Chief Ambassador to the Youth Market. That would be a safe place for her to hide and heal since no youth are going to bother with CBS.
What should Katie learn from this unfortunate experience? The marketplace has gone totally niche (see Chris Anderson's "The Long Tail"). And not all niches will be good fits. Katie's niche was A.M., not P.M.
